Best Time for Multi-Day Trekking in Uzbekistan

Best time for multi-day trekking in Uzbekistan's Tien-Shan mountains

After 33 years of guiding in the Tien-Shan mountains, I'm often asked: "When is the best time to visit for a multi-day trek?" The honest answer? Every season has its magic. But depending on what you're looking for, certain months shine brighter.

Spring (March – May)

Spring is a time of renewal in the mountains. March can still be cold with snow at higher elevations, but by late April and May, the lower valleys burst into bloom. Wildflowers carpet the meadows, rivers run full and clear, and temperatures are pleasant for hiking (15-25°C / 59-77°F during the day).

May is particularly beautiful — the Chimgan region is lush and green, and the weather is stable enough for multi-day trips. This is one of my favorite times for the Chimgan Explorer tour.

Summer (June – August)

Summer is peak trekking season. Daytime temperatures range from 25-35°C (77-95°F) in the valleys, but it's much cooler at higher elevations. The Tien-Shan and Ugam-Chatkal National Park are at their most accessible. Long daylight hours (sunrise around 5am, sunset after 8pm) give you plenty of time to hike, explore, and enjoy campfire evenings.

This is the best time for longer expeditions like the 5-day Ugam-Chatkal Wilderness trek. Nights are comfortable for camping, and the starry skies are unforgettable.

Autumn (September – October)

Autumn is arguably the most photogenic season. The golden and red foliage against the stark mountain landscapes creates breathtaking scenery. Temperatures are mild (15-25°C / 59-77°F), crowds thin out, and the air is crystal clear.

September is perfect for the 3-day Tien-Shan Crossing. October is still good for trekking, though nights get colder — proper sleeping bags are essential.

Winter (November – February)

Winter trekking in Uzbekistan is a hidden gem. With 450+ winter expeditions under our belt, I can tell you it's magical. Snow-covered peaks, frozen waterfalls, and the absolute silence of a winter landscape — there's nothing like it.

Daytime temperatures range from -5 to 5°C (23-41°F). Nights can drop to -15°C (5°F) or lower. We provide all necessary cold-weather camping gear. Our 4-day Winter Expedition is specially designed for this season.
