Overnight trek in the Chimgan mountains Uzbekistan what to expect

You've booked your first overnight trek in the Chimgan mountains. Now you're wondering: What will actually happen? What's the daily routine? What is it like sleeping in a tent on a mountain? I've guided over 1,800 overnight expeditions, and I can tell you exactly what to expect.

The Chimgan mountains are located just 85 km from Tashkent — about a 1.5-hour drive. The Greater Chimgan peak rises to 3,309m, and our treks take you through the beautiful Ugam-Chatkal National Park, which covers 668,350 hectares of protected wilderness. Our most popular overnight option is the Chimgan Explorer (2 days / $180).

Day 1: Departure and Ascent

Morning — Pickup from Tashkent

Your adventure begins with a morning pickup from your hotel in Tashkent. We'll drive east through the suburbs and into the foothills of the Tien-Shan. The landscape transforms from city streets to rolling hills and finally to dramatic mountain scenery. We'll stop for photos at viewpoints along the way. Chimgan village, at the base of the mountains, is our last stop for any final supplies.

Late Morning — Trailhead and Hike Begins

We arrive at the trailhead in the Ugam-Chatkal National Park. After a quick gear check and introduction to the route, we begin hiking. The terrain varies — forested paths, rocky sections, open meadows with wildflowers (in spring), and gentle river crossings. The pace is comfortable with regular breaks. We typically hike 4-6 hours on Day 1, with an elevation gain of 400-700m depending on the route.

Afternoon — Arrival at Camp

We reach our campsite in the afternoon. Andrey and I will set up the tents and organize the camp kitchen. This is your time to rest, take photos, and soak in the mountain views. Our campsites are chosen for their beauty, shelter, and water access. If you've booked a Photography Tour, the late afternoon golden light is prime shooting time.

Evening — Dinner and Campfire

Dinner is cooked over a campfire or portable stove. We serve hearty, nourishing meals — see our article on what you'll eat on a mountain trek for details. After dinner, we sit around the campfire, share stories, and enjoy the incredible starry sky. The Tien-Shan mountains have minimal light pollution, making for unforgettable stargazing.

Day 2: Summit Push and Return

Early Morning — Sunrise and Breakfast

We wake early — sunrise in the mountains is spectacular. Hot tea or coffee, a warm breakfast, and then we pack up camp. This is when you'll appreciate having packed light, as everything goes back into your backpack.

Mid-Morning — Optional Summit Hike

Depending on your fitness level and the tour selected, we may hike to a summit for panoramic views. The Greater Chimgan peak (3,309m) offers breathtaking 360-degree views of the entire Tien-Shan range. Even if you don't reach the summit, the viewpoints along the ridge are spectacular. We descend back to the trailhead by early afternoon.

Afternoon — Return to Tashkent

We drive back to Tashkent, arriving in the late afternoon. You'll have the evening free to explore the capital, enjoy a traditional plov dinner, or rest after your adventure. Many guests tell us they feel a profound sense of accomplishment — and they're already planning their next trek.

What About Camp Life?

Toilets: In the backcountry, we follow Leave No Trace principles. We bring a portable toilet system for overnight camps and designate private areas for nature calls.

Showers: There are no showers at camp. We provide wet wipes and biodegradable soap for washing. Mountain streams are cold but refreshing for a quick wash.

Phone signal: There is limited to no cell reception in the Chimgan mountains. This is one of the things our guests love most — a true digital detox. We carry a satellite phone for emergencies.

Wildlife: You may see marmots, eagles, and if you're very lucky, the elusive snow leopard or Tien-Shan brown bear. We keep a safe distance and never feed wildlife.

What Makes Chimgan Special?

The Chimgan mountains are part of the greater Tien-Shan range and offer some of the most accessible wilderness trekking in Central Asia. The variety of landscapes — alpine meadows, rocky gorges, juniper forests, and snow-capped peaks — is remarkable for such a compact area. Is It Safe?

Absolutely. Uzbekistan is very safe for travelers. The mountains are our home, and we know every trail, weather pattern, and safe camping spot. We carry comprehensive first aid kits and emergency communication devices. For more on staying safe, read our Travel Safety guide.
