One of the most common questions we receive is: "Is Uzbekistan only a summer trekking destination?" The answer is a resounding no. While the peak season runs from April to October, the Tien-Shan mountains offer remarkable experiences in every month of the year. With 33 years of year-round guiding and over 450 winter expeditions, here is your month-by-month guide to trekking in Uzbekistan.
January is the heart of winter in the Tien-Shan. Snow blankets the Chimgan region from base to summit. Temperatures range from -5°C to -15°C (23°F to 5°F) during the day, dropping lower at night. The landscape is transformed into a pristine white wonderland. This is the month for serious winter trekkers who appreciate solitude — trails are nearly empty, and the silence of snow-covered mountains is profound.
Recommended tour: Winter Expedition (4 days, $480). Highlights include winter camping, snowshoeing, and frozen waterfalls.
Similar conditions to January, but daylight hours begin to lengthen. February is excellent for winter photography — the low-angle sun creates long shadows and golden light on snowy peaks. Avalanche risk is present in steep terrain; we choose routes carefully based on snow conditions. The English Club sometimes organizes winter day hikes for members who want mountain experience without overnight camping.
March is a transitional month. Lower elevations begin to thaw, but higher trails remain snow-covered. Daytime temperatures in the valleys reach 10-15°C (50-59°F). This is a good month for experienced trekkers who want to catch the last of the winter scenery without extreme cold. The snow begins to melt on south-facing slopes, creating small streams and waterfalls.
Spring arrives in earnest. The lower Chimgan trails become accessible without specialized winter gear. Temperatures range from 15-20°C (59-68°F) during the day. The first wildflowers appear — tiny purple irises and yellow buttercups emerging from the melting snow. April is perfect for day hikes and the 2-day Chimgan Explorer. The Chirchik River runs high with snowmelt, creating impressive rapids.
May is arguably the most beautiful month for trekking in Uzbekistan. The mountains explode with color — red tulips, blue gentians, white edelweiss, and endless green meadows. Temperatures are ideal: 20-25°C (68-77°F) during the day. All trails become accessible, including routes to the Polatkhan Plateau. This is our busiest month for multi-day treks, and for good reason.
Perfect for: Tien-Shan Crossing (3 days, $320). Spring wildflowers at their peak.
Summer arrives. Days are long (sunrise around 5am, sunset after 8pm) and warm. June offers the best balance of pleasant temperatures and accessible trails before the summer heat. The Polatkhan Plateau and Ugam-Chatkal Wilderness are at their prime. Wildflowers continue blooming at higher elevations. This is the ideal month for the 5-day Ugam-Chatkal Wilderness trek.
July is the warmest month. Valley temperatures can reach 35°C (95°F), but higher elevations remain comfortable at 20-25°C (68-77°F). All high mountain routes are open, including Greater Chimgan Peak. This is the best month for longer expeditions and peak bagging. The night skies are spectacular — the Milky Way visible in all its glory from high camps.
Perfect for: Photography Tour (2-5 days). Maximum daylight for shooting.
Similar to July, with stable weather patterns. August is excellent for horseback trekking — the mountain pastures are lush, and the horses are in top condition. Our Horseback Trek (3-5 days) is especially popular in August. Afternoon thunderstorms are common but usually brief. Start hikes early to avoid storms and heat.
September is magic. The autumn foliage transforms the mountains into shades of gold, orange, and red. Temperatures are mild (20-25°C / 68-77°F days, cool nights). The air is crisp and clear, offering the best visibility for photography. Crowds thin out after the summer peak. September is my personal favorite month for trekking.
Perfect for: Tien-Shan Crossing and Photography Tour. Autumn colors are unforgettable.
October offers excellent trekking conditions for the first half of the month. Days are warm (15-20°C / 59-68°F), nights are cold (near freezing). The autumn colors continue into early October. By late October, snow begins to dust the higher peaks. Winter gear may be needed for overnight trips. The English Club Hikes continue through October for day trips.
November is the start of the winter trekking season. The first significant snowfalls transform the landscape. Daytime temperatures range from 0-10°C (32-50°F). Winter expeditions begin, and the mountains take on a serene, quiet beauty. This is a great month for experienced trekkers who want to ease into winter conditions.
Recommended: Winter Expedition (4 days, $480). First snow of the season.
December brings reliable snow cover and winter conditions. The Chimgan ski base operates for skiers and snowboarders. For trekkers, the Winter Expedition offers the full winter camping experience: snowshoeing through deep powder, camping on snow, and enjoying hot tea around a camp stove while snow falls around you. It is challenging, beautiful, and deeply rewarding.
