After 33 years of guiding over 1,800 multi-day expeditions in Uzbekistan's Tien-Shan mountains, the question I hear most often is: "When should I come?" The truth is every season offers something unique, but your ideal trekking window depends on what kind of experience you want.
Uzbekistan's Tien-Shan range stretches across the eastern part of the country, with the Chimgan region sitting just 85 km from Tashkent. The trekking season runs roughly from April through October, with winter expeditions from November to February for those seeking adventure in the snow.
March is transitional. Lower elevations around Chimgan (1,500-2,000m) may be snow-free by late month, but the higher passes remain snow-covered. Daytime temperatures range from 5-15°C (41-59°F). This is a good month for experienced trekkers who don't mind some snow on the trail. The Chimgan Explorer tour operates from mid-March onward when conditions allow.
April brings rapid change. Snow melts rapidly, streams swell, and the first wildflowers appear in the lower valleys. Daytime temperatures reach 15-20°C (59-68°F). The landscape turns from brown to green almost overnight. This is a wonderful time for photography as the contrast between snow-capped peaks and green valleys is striking. April is ideal for the Tien-Shan Crossing if you want moderate temperatures and fewer crowds.
May is one of the best months for trekking in Uzbekistan. The meadows are carpeted with wildflowers — poppies, irises, tulips, and edelweiss. Temperatures range from 18-25°C (64-77°F) during the day, with cool nights around 5-10°C (41-50°F). The weather is stable, trails are in excellent condition, and the Chimgan region is lush and green. Our Ugam-Chatkal Wilderness trek is spectacular in May.
June brings warm, stable weather. Daytime temperatures range from 25-30°C (77-86°F) in the valleys, but it's much cooler at elevation above 2,500m. The high mountain passes open as the last snow melts. Long daylight hours (sunrise around 5am, sunset after 8pm) mean you can cover more distance each day. June is perfect for longer expeditions like the 5-day Ugam-Chatkal Wilderness trek.
July is the hottest month in the lowlands, but the mountains remain comfortable. Expect 25-35°C (77-95°F) in Tashkent, but a pleasant 18-25°C (64-77°F) at trekking elevations above 2,000m. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in July — we always plan our routes to reach camp before the daily storms roll in. The Horseback Trek is particularly enjoyable in July when the high pastures are at their greenest.
August is similar to July but with slightly cooler evenings. It's the most popular month for international visitors. The photography conditions are excellent with clear morning light. Nights are comfortable for camping at 10-15°C (50-59°F). August is ideal for all our standard tours. We recommend booking well in advance as spots fill quickly.
September is my personal favorite. The summer crowds are gone, the air is crystal clear, and the autumn foliage turns the mountains gold and red. Daytime temperatures are perfect for hiking — 20-25°C (68-77°F) — with cool, crisp nights. This is prime time for the Photography Tour and the Tien-Shan Crossing. The golden autumn light makes every viewpoint unforgettable.
October offers mild days (15-20°C / 59-68°F) and chilly nights (0-5°C / 32-41°F). The autumn colors peak in early October. By late October, the higher trails may get the first snow. This is a great month for shorter treks like the Chimgan Explorer or the English Club Hike. Bring warm layers — the temperature drops dramatically after sunset.
November sees the first significant snowfall in the mountains. Daytime temperatures range from -5 to 5°C (23-41°F). The landscape transforms into a winter wonderland. With proper gear — which we provide — winter camping is comfortable and unforgettable. We've led over 450 winter expeditions. Our Winter Expedition (4 days / $480) is specially designed for this season.
These are the coldest months. Nighttime temperatures can drop to -15°C (5°F) or lower. Snow cover is deep, especially above 2,000m. But here's the secret: winter trekking in Uzbekistan offers something no other season can. The absolute silence of a snow-covered forest. Frozen waterfalls. Stars so bright they seem close enough to touch. Winter treks require more preparation but reward you with an experience few travelers ever have.
