Chimgan — the gateway to the Tien-Shan mountains — is just 85 kilometers from Tashkent. The drive takes approximately 1.5 hours, making it one of the most accessible mountain destinations in Central Asia. But if you're arriving at Tashkent International Airport without a car, you might wonder: how exactly do I get there?
This guide covers every option — from budget-friendly buses to private transfers — so you can choose the best way to reach the mountains. If you book a trek with us, transport is included, but this information is useful for independent travelers too.
The most comfortable and reliable option. Price: approximately 200,000-350,000 som ($16-28 USD) one way, depending on the vehicle and operator.
We recommend booking a private transfer through Yandex Go (the local ride-hailing app) or arranging one with your guesthouse or trekking provider. When you book a trek with Viola travel, we include transport from Tashkent to Chimgan and back — you'll be met at a designated meeting point or your hotel.
The drive follows the M39 highway north from Tashkent, passing through the town of Gazalkent before entering the mountain valley. The road is paved all the way to Chimgan village. The last section winds through scenic foothills with views of the Charvak Reservoir.
For budget travelers, shared taxis (marshrutkas) are the most affordable option. Price: around 30,000-50,000 som ($2.50-4 USD) per person.
Marshrutkas to Chimgan depart from several locations in Tashkent. The main departure point is from the Chimgan Bus Station (near the Olmazor metro station), also known as the "Chimgan Bazaar" stop. Buses and shared taxis leave when full (typically every 30-60 minutes from early morning until late afternoon).
The journey on a marshrutka takes about 1.5-2 hours. The vehicles are typically 7-14 seat minibuses. They can get crowded, and luggage space is limited — a backpack is fine, but a large suitcase may be difficult. Pay the driver directly in cash (som).
Price: approximately 20,000-30,000 som ($1.50-2.50 USD) per person.
Regular buses to Chimgan also depart from the Chimgan Bus Station in Tashkent. These are larger buses that run on a fixed schedule, typically with departures every 1-2 hours. The ride takes about 2 hours. Buses are cheaper than marshrutkas but slower and less comfortable.
Look for buses with "Чимган" or "Chimgan" written on the front. The final stop is the main square of Chimgan village, from where you can walk to many guesthouses or arrange a short taxi ride to trailheads.
If you're comfortable driving in Uzbekistan, renting a car is a flexible option. Prices start at approximately $30-50 USD per day for a compact car. International driving permits are required.
The drive from Tashkent city center to Chimgan is straightforward: take the M39 highway north toward Kokand, then follow signs to Chimgan/Charvak. The road is well-maintained but has some sharp curves in the mountain section. Parking in Chimgan village is generally free and easy to find.
Note: We recommend against self-driving to trek trailheads, as many are on unpaved roads. If you're joining a guided trek, it's easier to let us handle the transport.
The drive from Tashkent to Chimgan is scenic from the moment you leave the city. Here's what you'll see along the way:
• 0-30 minutes: Leaving Tashkent's suburbs, passing through villages and farmland.
• 30-50 minutes: The road passes the Charvak Reservoir — a massive turquoise body of water surrounded by dry hills. It's worth stopping for photos.
• 50-80 minutes: Entering the Chimgan valley. The road narrows and winds through hills covered in wild grasses and juniper trees.
• 80-90 minutes: Arrival at Chimgan village or the trailhead for your trek.
We highly recommend downloading offline maps (Google Maps or Maps.me) before leaving Tashkent, as mobile reception can be patchy in the mountains.
When you book any trek with us — whether it's the 2-day Chimgan Explorer, the 3-day Tien-Shan Crossing, or the 5-day Ugam-Chatkal Wilderness trek — transport from Tashkent is included in the price. We pick you up from a meeting point (or your Tashkent hotel for private groups) and drop you back after the trek.
This is honestly the easiest option. You arrive in Tashkent, we take care of everything, and within 1.5 hours you're standing in the Tien-Shan mountains with no hassle. For more information about what to expect on the trek itself, read our packing guide and seasonal guide.
Getting back to Tashkent follows the same options in reverse. Marshrutkas and buses depart from Chimgan village regularly until about 5-6pm. If you're staying until late, a private transfer booked through Yandex Go is the most reliable option. For our guided treks, return transport is included and we typically arrive back in Tashkent by early afternoon on the final day.
